Mechanic Sentenced To 12-Month In Prison For Fraud

A 27-year-old technician named Adebayo Muhammed Bolaji was given a 12-month prison term.

Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court convicted him on Thursday for offenses involving cybercrime and the possession of false cash.

On September 15, 2022, Adebayo, a native of Kwara State's Ilorin West Local Government Area, began his trip inside the Nigerian Correctional Facility.

He and other people were detained near Airport Road in Ilorin after the EFCC acquired information about the operations of some online scammers there.

The Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC later presented him for arraignment before the court on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 on a two-count charge.

"That you, Adebayo Muhamed Bolaji, sometime in the months of September 2021 and September 2022 in Ilorin, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, knowingly had under your control the sum of N3, 200,000 (Three Million, Two Hundred Thousand Naira), through your bank account number 2011025023 domiciled with Kuda Microfinance Bank Ltd, reasonably suspected to have been obtained unlawfully and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punitive to the provisions.

He admitted guilt to the charge, and after hearing his confessional statement and the prosecution's evidence, Justice Abdulgafar found him guilty. Adebayo was found guilty and given a six-month suspended sentence.

The convict's Toyota Camry, one iPhone 13, and the $520 (five hundred and twenty dollars) he brought as restitution were also ordered to be forfeited to the federal government by the judge.
