Rishi Sunak Makes His Maiden Speech

Rishi Sunak repeated what is becoming a familiar refrain of his, saying that Britain is facing “a profound economic crisis.” He added that he would put economic stability at the heart of his government’s agenda. “This will mean difficult decisions to come,” he said.

Sunak contends that the Conservative Party’s mandate from the 2019 election does not belong to any individual. Pushes back on the idea that he does not have a mandate, even though he was elected by barely 200 Tory lawmakers.

A somber but confident statement from Rishi Sunak. He draws a sharp distinction with Liz Truss. “Mistakes were made, not born of ill will or bad intentions,” he adds, but says there were “mistakes nonetheless.” He promises to fix them.

Rishi Sunak’s first address as prime minister acknowledges the difficulties Britain is facing, and the magnitude of the moment. “I fully appreciate how hard things are, and I understand, too, that I have work to do to restore trust after all that has happened,” he said. “All I can say is that I am not daunted.”

Rishi Sunak promises a government of “integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level.” He adds, “Trust is earned, and I will earn yours.”

Rishi Sunak, speaking now, is the first British prime minister in nearly seven decades to utter the words that he would “accept his majesty the king’s invitation to form a government in his name.” His predecessors during that time came under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
