The Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), and the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have announced resumption dates following the suspension of the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
FUOYE announced the immediate resumption of academic activities
for fresh and returning students for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 sessions.
The Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor on Media Matters,
Wole Balogun, said the university Senate had also approved that two academic
sessions – the second semester of the 2020/2021 academic session and the first
semester of the 2021/2022 academic session – be run simultaneously.
Balogun, in a statement titled, “FUOYE resumes academic
activities,” said the approval was “with a view to making up for the loss of
eight months to the just suspended industrial strike action of the Academic
Union of Universities.”
According to him, a circular dated October 18, signed by the
Registrar, Ibrahim Mufutau, had stated that resumption and registration for
fresh students and lectures for the second semester for returning students began
on October 17, 2022.
It added, “Lectures for fresh students kick off on Monday,
October 24, and on Thursday, October 27, registration for fresh students ends as
the university holds the 2021/2022 matriculation ceremony for fresh students on
the following day, Friday, October 28.”
Balogun stated that while the 2021/2022 First Semester would end
in January 2023, the 2020/2021 session will also end in December 2022. A new
session, 2022/2023, for which admission screening is currently ongoing, may
kick off around June 2023.”
For UNIBEN, students are expected to return to school on Sunday
in line with the institution’s amended calendar.
A statement on Wednesday by the institution’s spokesperson, Dr
Benedicta Ehanire, read, “The University of Benin Senate has amended the
institution’s 2020/2021 academic calendar and approved Sunday, October 23,
2022, for students to return to halls of residence.
“Lectures are expected to continue on October 24 as the second
semester was truncated for eight months following the recently suspended strike
by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The semester is to run until
December 23.
“Meanwhile, online registration of new students admitted for
2021/2022 begins on December 2.”
