A
frontline politician and Labour Party (LP) governorship frontrunner in Imo
State, Sir Basil Maduka has claimed that for Nigeria to move forward, there
must be a total democratic leadership change at the 2023 election. He,
therefore, urged the electorates to guard their PVCs jealously as they vote for
a new President on February 25.
Speaking
to newsmen on the state-of-the- nation at his country home in Imo State, the
Akpokwu-Egbelu Akpodim Mbaise born politician and technocrat revealed that the
only way Nigeria could have a break from its ugly past is to elect a competent,
selfless, vibrant and God-fearing man to be at the helm of affairs as
President.
He
warned that Nigerians would be in a deeper problem if they vote for people who
are fingered to have contributed to the socio-economic woes that have made
Nigeria the poverty capital of the world.
Sir
Maduka, an international integrated oil and gas services icon stated further
that Nigeria needs a man with capacity to reset and recalibrate the nation to
achieve its full potentials and take its rightful place on the comity of
nations.
He
said: “Nigeria is where it is today because of systemic corruption from high
places. Most of the leaders we have had are only interested in what they get
from the country and not what they would give to the country.
“We should not make the mistake of bringing to power leaders who could not
explain their source of wealth or those that have corruption charges hanging on
their neck. There must be a total break from the past.”
On
the presidential candidates, the knight of the Anglican Communion warned
Nigerians to be careful on their choice of new President. According to him,
Nigerians should not vote for candidates that would see the country as an
extension of their private estate. They should rather vote for a candidate that
has capacity and would bring the country out the woods.
On
why he is running for the governorship of Imo State on the Labour Party ticket,
Sir Maduka explained that he is driven by the desire to bring solution to the
age-long socio-economic problems confronting Imo State which past
administrations in the state have not been able to solve.
He
believes to achieve a just society, many existing structures of government and
the economy of Imo State must be transformed through greater economic and
social democracy so that ordinary citizens can truly participate in the
decisions that affect their lives.
