The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has declared for nationwide strike action over the removal of fuel subsidy and the subsequent increase of the pump price of fuel across the country.
Labour arrived at the decision to embark on nationwide industrial action after her emergency NEC meeting held on Friday in Abuja.
In a statement addressed to all presidents of NLC affiliates in the country and signed by its general secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja titled "Notice of Mobilization for Nationwide Withdrawal of Services", he noted that after the NEC meeting held on Friday in Abuja, they decided that Congress embarks on nationwide strike action and withdrawal of services "against the fraudulent increase in prices of fuel in all the 36 States of the federation and FCT."
The statement stated that all NLC affiliate bodies should withdrawal their services from Wednesday, June 7, 2023 and directed all concerned to enforce the direct in their respective sector.
Meanwhile, the subsidy removal policy of the Federal Government may have snowballed into another crisis as the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress is perfecting plans to probe payments for imported fuel made under the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero gave this indication on Friday, at an emergency National Executive Council meeting of the Labour union in Abuja.
Lamenting the situation, Ajaero said most of the State Governors were still defaulting in the payment of the N30,000 minimum wage and the government was feigning ignorance that over half of the population in Nigeria were experiencing multidimensional poverty.
“We are going to probe subsidy payments in the last eight years, at least that under the immediate past administration of Muhammadu Buhari because nobody seems to be looking in that direction,” he stated in the presence of media organisations on ground at the briefing session.
