The African Union (AU) has issued a demand to the military in Niger, urging them to relinquish power and “return to their barracks” within 15 days after carrying out a coup in the nation, which has been facing jihadist threats.
In a communique released after a meeting on the Niger coup, the AU’s Peace and Security Council expressed strong condemnation of the overthrow of the elected government and President Mohamed Bazoum. The council also voiced deep concern over the troubling resurgence of military coups across Africa.
The detained President Bazoum was taken into custody on Wednesday, and the coup plotters subsequently declared General Abdourahamane Tchiani, who had been heading the Presidential Guard since 2011, as the new leader.
The military justified their actions as a response to the deteriorating security situation in the country. However, the international community condemned the coup as a blatant power grab.
In light of the unfolding events, the AU’s call for the military to restore constitutional authority and return to their barracks is aimed at upholding democratic principles and preserving stability in Niger.
