The West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA) has congratulated the Nigeria's president Ahmed Bola TINUBU over his election as the new Chair of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a congratulatory message signed by Dauda Kazeem, Vice president (south west), Martin Igwe, Director Media and Advocacy, and Danzaki Ismail, Secretary respectively expressed joy on the election of Nigeria president.
"We write to express our joy on your Emergence as the chairman of the Authority of leaders of state and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This very important honour given to your Excellency came at the right time when West Africa needed a leadership with exceptional political will to tackle the menance of political conflict, insecurity and climate change which collectively remains threats towards the realization of sustainable development goals.
"With the already promise to take democracy serious, we humbly appeal to your excellency to combine it with poverty alleviation, security with special consideration to the illegal proliferation of small arms and light weapons, Regional Boarder security and climate change Mitigation.
The group stated that democratic ideals cannot be realised when the polity is ravaged by poverty and conflict hence wholistically addressing these menance remains an overt step to take the renewed hope to the regional political landscape.
