MY BRIEF PERCEPTION AND REFLECTION ON THE INEVITABLE RESURGENCE OF MILITARY COUPS IN DEMOCRATIC POLITICS

By Vitalismary Unachukwu

Yes, there’s another military coup in Gabon. Is that a surprise?  Which nation would be next?

The resurgence of military coups, is another great reminder and reawakening for the people of Africa, especially in the Francophone West Africa.

Those in the Anglophone West Africa are systematically and patiently watching and studying the unfolding developments in this period of the millennium, with equanimity.

You can wake up any day, anywhere and hear military music and sirens, reminding you that the political tide has changed with the sacking of an incumbent civilian government, along with the suspension of the Constitution and impeding the functions of Democratic Institutions.

Will these unfortunate circumstances teach Nigeria’s Politicians any  meaningful lessons they should have learnt from the First Republic till date?

This sudden upset in Gabon, aimed at sacking the French colonial government and their civilian stooges in office, marks a new beginning to rid Africa of all vestiges of colonialism and neocolonialism, after military coups in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic.

Nations hitherto of British Colonies, should reappraise their relations with the British Government and correct this lopsided situation, by recalling the colonial atrocities of the past and giving Britain a red card for having milked them enough in a relationship that’s anything but symbiotic.

What has Britain done for Nigeria since political independence, apart from feeding a parasitic gloss on Nigeria, wholly depending on Nigeria for everything and hiding behind a smokescreen to undermine and destroy our democracy in complicity with inexperienced diehard Northern Politicians, who do their bidding all the time, while Nigeria and Nigerians remain enslaved to the British Government and the Crown.

When will Nigeria be truly, politically and economically independent in reality?

Civilians have continued to be a huge disappointment in bastardizing democracy in its true form, and it seems they are being taught a bitter lesson, through military coups, for having learnt nothing in serving the people through self aggrandizement.

Although, military coups are still aberrations throughout the world, it looks like they are being used to call back the corrupted minds of the politicians towards proper compliance with conventional, ethical, democratic norms, principles, values and standards, lacking today in our body politic.

Do you wonder why the people welcome military coups, after losing trust and confidence in their so called political representatives in government?

We don’t pray for bloodshed in the prosecution of this difficult process.

The huge political joke in Nigeria, requires proper rethinking and redressing, before we become enmeshed in our own political debacle.

The politicians are responsible for their fate and the resurgence of military incursions into politics, after their unspeakably woeful failures, gross incompetence, negligence, incorrigibility, mismanagement and corruption in office, dashing our hopes, dreams and aspirations, letting everyone down, while living like mad Emperors and leaving no one in doubt of their true intent in joining politics and running for office.

I weep for Nigeria and wait on God’s intervention, to stop all the ongoing pernicious jokes in the name of politics.

It’s well with us.
