Kano Govt Disagrees With Commissioner Of Police Over Ban Of Sallah Festivities

The Kano State government has stated that the Kano police commissioner lacks the authority to ban the celebration of Sallah festivities in Kano.

In a statement released by Kano State Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi.

The commissioner pointed out that the Commissioner of Police has repeatedly failed to follow the Governor's lawful directives as the Chief Security Officer, claiming to be acting on higher authority.

He said, “I am compelled to ask the question: who is usurping the authority of the Commander-In-Chief. Because some people are dishing-out directives to security chiefs in the State so much so that the State Police Commissioner without any consultation with the Chief Security Officer of the State or approval from the State Security Council had issued an order banning Eid-el-Kabir festivities in Kano State.

“How can anybody in his right senses ban Sallah festivities in Kano? and when did the State Governor seized to be the Chief Security Officer of the State that he will only see such ban on social media? Who is pushing the State Commissioner of Police to usurp the authority of the Governor?

“It’s important to stress that the Commissioner of Police has been consistent in disobeying the legitimate instructions of the Governor as Chief Security Officer, hiding behind orders from above. I ask gain, what is the offence of Kano people that the Nigeria Police penciled them for destruction?”

Speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Yusuf, the Attorney-General noted: “Some people are desperately scheming to unjustly penalise the people of Kano for keeping to the tradition of radical politics of voting with their conscience.”

On the recent judgement by the Federal High Court No. 3 in Kano, which claimed that the former emir’s fundamental rights were infringed upon, including allegations of house arrest, Dederi said: “No one forced him into Gidan Nasarawa, belonging to the government of Kano State. He went in there and stayed there of his own volition, accompanied by security guards. Therefore, no one put him under house arrest.

“When the former emir came in accompanied by hoodlums threatening the peace and orderliness of the state, the governor was under a duty to act to ensure peace, and that was why he issued the arrest order.”

While raising concerns about the Commissioner of Police’s actions, especially the unilateral decision to ban Eid el-Kabir festivities without consulting the governor or the state security council, Isa Dederi said: “How can anybody in his right senses ban Sallah festivities in Kano? And when did the state governor cease to be the state’s chief security officer so that he would only see such a ban on social media? Any attempt by anybody to undo that is an assault on democracy.”
