Residents Scamper, As Gunmen Unleash Sporadic Shootings In Imo

 


The return of the gunmen in Imo State has unsettled the residents, including visiting traditional rulers who came for a function in the State on Wednesday.


For three consecutive days, Imo State has been in turmoil due to the resurgence of gunmen who are shooting and killing innocent people including police officers on duty.


The ugly incident started on Monday evening when unidentified gunmen killed four policemen and a young lady suspected to be a POS operator in Irete along Owerri-Onitsha road.


Again, on Tuesday, it was another round of sporadic shootings and killings in the State. Reports had it that two men were gunned down in Nworieubi, opposite the Police Station in Mbaitoli local government. 


Another shooting occurred at Amawire, Orji where a young man was killed in his boutique shop, while in Owerri-Okigwe road incident of attacks were also recorded.


Reports had it that a State government owned waste disposal truck was set ablaze by the gunmen and one person killed during fresh attacks at Amawire, Orji and Nkwo Orji respectively in Owerri North LGA.


On Wednesday, there was a repeat of the shootings and attacks across Owerri Municipality. 


Residents of Owerri were thrown into a state of panic as sporadic gunshots were heard from areas like Ikenegbu, Imo State University (IMSU) back gate, Wetheral Road, Amawusa, and Toronto axis.


In recent times the governor of the State, Senator Hope Uzodimma had put frantic efforts to fight insecurity in the State. His effort had recorded significant result as insecurity was reduced to the lowest level.


Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has launched a head-on attack on the suspected gunmen, vowing to apprehend them “dead or alive.”


The Imo State Police Command Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, stated that the hoodlums have adopted a “guerilla-style strategy” of surprise attacks and quick retreats.


Okoye assured that the Command is on top of the situation and will deal with the miscreants responsible for the attacks and killing of security operatives and innocent civilians.


He urged Imolites to report any suspicious persons or activities to the Police, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to restore peace in the state.


Intensive operations are ongoing to restore normalcy, with a shootout between Police and the gunmen already reported.
