Tuesday, being January, 28 2025; a visit to Akwakuma Girls Secondary School was made by the Special Adviser (SA) to the Governor on Narcotics and Illicit Drug Monitoring, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, alongside with the Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) department of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), as part of a drug abuse campaign.
The campaign was aimed at educating students about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
During the visit, the SA and NDLEA representatives engaged with students, sharing information on the risks associated with drug abuse, such as physical and mental dependence, and the consequences of drug trafficking.
They emphasized the importance of making informed choices and the need for students to prioritize their health, well-being, and education.
The team also discussed the various types of commonly abused drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, and opioids, highlighting their effects and the potential long-term damage they can cause.
Additionally, they provided information on the resources available to support individuals struggling with drug addiction, such as counseling services and rehabilitation programs.
The visit was an opportunity for the students to ask questions and seek guidance on how to navigate the challenges of drug abuse and peer pressure.
The SA and NDLEA representatives encouraged the students to make positive choices and to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with drug addiction.
The Special Adviser to the governor, alerted the students about the new form of illicit drug that is fast spreading across secondary schools called STRAWBERRY QUICK. According to the SA, this drug comes in the form of strawberries. This is to avoid being easily detected. The drug is another form of Crystal Meth which is popularly known as "mkpuru mmiri."
He advised the students to avoid taking gifts from strangers and always be on the alert.
The visit to Akwakuma Girls Secondary School was a valuable step in promoting awareness and education about drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking and in supporting the well-being and safety of the students.
The team visits Government Secondary School Owerri today (Wednesday) in continuation of the campaign against the menace of drug abuse.
