The WomenAid Collective (WACOL) is deeply terrified and outraged by the recent spate of abominable acts perpetrated in Enugu State, by some unscrupulous elements, acts that not only violates the sanctity of life but also erode the moral fabric of our communities.
The group strongly condemns the abduction of a 13-year-old girl for an alleged ritual by one Ezeani Umuojor, popularly known as “E dey play, E dey show”, a so-called native doctor from Umumba Ndiagu community in Ezeagu Local Government Area adding that the disturbing reports detailing the discovery of a pit filled with human remains, women, infants, and even a pregnant woman, points to a chilling legacy of horror and brutality.
WACOL not only described the incidents as crimes against humanity but an outright assaults on the most vulnerable members of society, particularly women and children.
"We commend the swift intervention of concerned residents, the Ezeagu Local Government Council Chairman, and the Enugu State Government for taking decisive action, including the demolition of the suspect's properties."
The body stated that the remedy must not stop at public outrage and demolition, but demand full investigation, diligent prosecution, and the maximum penalty under the law to ensure that justice is served and deterrence achieved.
In another heart-wrenching development, WACOL decried the horrific murder of four teenage children in Eche Ezema village, Igbo Eze South LGA, allegedly by the driver of a clergyman, stating that "such heinous act adds a new dimension to the horror currently gripping our communities.
"The alleged crime, committed while both parents were away, speaks to a society in moral decay, where no space, not even the home is safe for our children."
WACOL stands in full solidarity with the bereaved families and the affected communities.
"These heinous acts reflect the urgent need for: Improved community policing and early warning systems, Stricter regulation and monitoring of unlicensed spiritual, traditional and religious actors, Institutional reforms that prioritize the protection of children and women from all forms of violence, and Psychosocial support and legal aid for victims and their families.
"We call on the Enugu State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and all relevant stakeholders to treat these matters with the urgency and seriousness they deserve. There must be no hiding place for ritualists, murderers, or abusers in our society, whether they operate under the guise of tradition or religion.
WACOL remains committed to ensuring justice for the oppressed, especially women and children, and will continue to push for policies, prosecutions, and partnerships that protect life, dignity, and human rights."
