Amby Uneze examines the intrigues surrounding the possible emergency of Governorship candidate in Imo State and advises Governor Hope Uzodimma to allow democracy prevail.
As we approach January 15, 2028, the date when a new governor will take office in Imo State, anticipation is building around the selection of a successor to the current governor, Hope Uzodimma. If Uzodimma honors his commitment to transfer power to the Owerri Senatorial Zone (Imo East), he will undoubtedly be celebrated for his dedication and leadership.
In contemplating his successor, Governor Uzodimma faces a critical decision. He must carefully evaluate candidates within the APC family from Imo East, keeping in mind the importance of choosing someone who can effectively lead and maintain the progress made during his tenure. It’s crucial that he avoids the pitfalls seen in other states where trusted political allies have turned against their predecessors.
Selecting a successor requires a thoughtful approach, focusing on several key factors:
Therefore, choosing a successor from the Owerri zone involves several critical considerations. Governor Uzodimma should evaluate among other parameters such as political experience which leaves the candidate with a solid background in politics and governance that can navigate the complexities of leadership effectively; community connection that makes the individual understands the local culture, needs, and aspirations of the people in the State more relatable and effective.
Other considerations include vision for development and ability to sustain and consolidate the achievements done by you. Looking for someone with a clear and actionable plan for economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare of the people; someone that has integrity and being accountable as a way to demonstrate commitment to transparency and ethical governance in building trust.
Someone that has the ability to unite - given the diverse interests within the State, that can foster unity and collaboration among different zones is essential, in addition to youth engagement that would focus on engaging and empowering the youth to ensure a vibrant future for the State. Track record of service, and strategic partnerships that can form alliances with stakeholders, both locally and nationally, to be able to position State appropriately.
However, the governor should as a matter of integrity and democratic principles avoid imposition of candidate(s) in any form or manner. He should maintain the status of a respected Statesman by allowing the will of the people through transparent primary. Imposition of candidates has not succeeded in Imo State and those who tried it failed and were disgraced out from office.
On Imo charter of equity, the governor should continue to apply wisdom and stick to that promise. Owerri zone has assured the people of the State of bringing a capable successor who the governor and Imolites would be proud of at the end of the day.
Several potential candidates are currently under consideration:
Enyinna Onuegbu
The current Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Onuegbu is a lawyer and has served as Chief Political Adviser to the governor. He is from Ngor Okpala local government area. He is sound, active and many people see him as a member of the kitchen cabinet of the governor. While respected, he may struggle to confront opposition effectively.
MacDonald Ebere
As the former State Chairman of the APC and related to the governor by marriage, Ebere's connection may not resonate with the wider public, making him a less favorable option. He hails from Owerri Municipal Council and he is far from the people as opinions from the public about him does not go in his favour.
Jerry Chukwueke
Known for his commitment to good governance, Chukwueke has a strong political background and international connections that could benefit the state. He comes of Owerri North local government area and a former Chief Technical Advisor (CTA) to Governor Uzodimma. Chukwueke goes by the nickname 'Great Mobilizer' which was given to him as a result of his massive mobilization of the people of the State at a time for national engagement. He has the intellectual capacity, integrity and economic prowess to fit rightly as governor Uzodimma's successor. His national and international connection and exposure to attract foreign investments gives him an edge. In recent times, he is deeply involved in promoting, supporting and advocating for President Ahmed Tinubu's economic agenda as well as working for his party's successes at every level. However, his ambitious development plans may need to be tempered.
Obioma Success Akagburuonye
A businessman in real estate, Akagburuonye is ambitious and well-connected. He comes from Aboh Mbaise local government area, and has the development of the State as his unique selling proposition (USP). He is ambitious, with a heavy war-chest to bankroll his aspiration. He has connections too among the high and mighty, although concerns about accessibility and arrogance may hinder his candidacy.
Emeka Ihedioha
As a former governor, Ihedioha remains a popular figure with significant political experience. As a former governor of only seven months, he remains a politician that has the most appeal or sympathy of the people. His experience as a former Speaker, deputy speaker of the House of Representatives place him prepared for the job. However, political party differences could pose challenges.
Jude Ejiogu
With a background as former Secretary to the State Government and Chief of Staff, Ejiogu is known for his integrity and commitment. Yet, issues of accessibility, age, and financial limitations may affect his viability.
Chima Matthew Amadi
Amadi comes from the private sector and talks tough, indicating that he is prepared to confront any obstacles that may come his way. He is from Ngor Okpala local government area and his new-found philanthropy is seen as a plot to hoodwink the people. There is no evidence of public service and leadership experience so far.
In sum, Governor Uzodimma’s choice of successor should reflect a deep understanding of the qualities necessary for effective leadership, ensuring that the next governor is well-equipped to serve the people of Imo State.
