The Enugu State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, Williams Ezugwu, days after he received the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, at his palace.
The suspension was announced by the state Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Charles Egumgbe, in a statement issued in Enugu on Thursday by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Emeka Nebeife.
According to the statement, Ezugwu was suspended over alleged persistent conduct considered inconsistent with provisions of the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State.
The commissioner said the suspension took immediate effect.
Among the allegations against the traditional ruler was his alleged failure to subscribe to the community’s code of conduct.
He was also accused of failing to constitute a cabinet to assist in the administration of the community since its creation.
The state government did not, however, cite the recent visit by Obi to the monarch’s palace as a reason for the suspension.
Ezugwu had received Obi at his palace during the former Anambra State governor’s recent visit to the community, where he met with residents and supporters.
The suspension has nevertheless triggered speculation in some quarters, with some alleging that the monarch’s decision to receive Obi may have contributed to the government’s action.
There is no official confirmation linking the suspension to Obi’s visit.
The latest action comes months after the state government suspended three traditional rulers and four presidents-general from Ezeagu Local Government Area over alleged misconduct relating to security matters.
