Nigeria's Under 20 female team, Falconet Sunday successfully advanced to the knockout stage of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after producing a stunning 10-1 victory over New Caledonia in Łódź.
The commanding win saw Nigeria finish second in Group F behind Spain, having accumulated four points from their three group matches. Their superior goal difference allowed them to finish above China, who also ended the group stage with four points.
The Falconets started the match aggressively, taking the lead in the 17th minute when Ramotalahi Kareem converted a penalty.
Group F Table After Nigeria Falconets Won 10-1
Rebecca Adegbemile doubled Nigeria’s advantage just two minutes later, while Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei added a third in the 23rd minute.
Kareem scored her second goal in the 27th minute as Nigeria established a 4-0 lead before halftime. She remained a constant threat after the break and eventually completed her hat-trick in the 64th minute.
Before Kareem reached three goals, Winner Onajite David had already found the net in the 60th minute to make it 5-0.
Nigeria continued to overwhelm their opponents, with Tosin Rafiu scoring the seventh goal in the 70th minute. Adegbemile then added her second of the game four minutes later.
David struck again in the 75th minute to put Nigeria 9-0 ahead and leave them just one goal away from reaching double figures.
New Caledonia managed to score a consolation goal through Joceline Kourevi in the 89th minute, but Nigeria quickly responded during stoppage time.
David completed her hat-trick in the fourth minute of added time to confirm the Falconets’ remarkable 10-1 triumph.
The victory marked a dramatic recovery for Nigeria after they opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Spain and subsequently played out a goalless draw against China.
Kareem and David both finished with three goals, while Adegbemile scored twice in Nigeria’s dominant performance.
With the group stage now concluded, the Falconets move into the knockout phase after ending their campaign with an outstanding attacking display against New Caledonia.
