FULL PROFILE: Meet New Chief Of Army Staff Major-General W. Shaibu

Major General  Waidi Shuaibu has been appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu.

Not many are aware of the new army chief’s military journey. Like the best of his contemporaries, he is a member of Course 41 Regular Combatant Course of the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), and from the Nigerian Army Armour Corps.

Major General Shuaibu did not stumble on prominence by accident but intricately sketched his way to the top. He has earned many honours for his meritorious service in various fields of operations.

He was former Theatre Commander, Northeast ‘Operation Hadin Kai’.

He was once the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Div, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

During his tenure, he recorded massive successes in defeating and degrading many terrorists, with many surrendering, including their families, currently undergoing rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

After his stint as the 11th GOC 7 Div, he proceeded to Defence Space Agency in Abuja having served for a period of 14 months.

He was a former Director of Training at the Army Headquarters Department of Training in Abuja.

He was also the former commander, 21 Special Armour Brigade Bama with experience in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the North East.

He was a member of College of International Security Affairs (CISA) before he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General of the Nigerian Army.

He served as principal staff officer at Defense Headquarters Abuja.

In 2024, he received the Security Watch Award for the most outstanding defense command in Africa an accolade that underscored the effectiveness of his leadership.

Waidi is not new to the myriad problems of insecurity confronting the nation, neither could he be oblivious of the tasks in his hands as he mounts the top leadership of the Army command.
