I Don't Know Why Nnamdi Kanu Listed Me As Witness But I Will Testify If Subpoenaed — Nyesom Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he is ready to appear as a witness in the ongoing trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu—if officially summoned by the court.

Wike made this known during his monthly media chat on Friday in Abuja, following questions about his inclusion on Kanu’s list of witnesses. Earlier in the week, Kanu had filed a motion at the Federal High Court, Abuja, indicating plans to open his defence on October 24, 2025.

The IPOB leader named 23 witnesses, including Wike, former Minister of Defence Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd), and former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd).

Reacting to the development, Wike said he was unaware of his inclusion and had not received any formal notice. “If you see Nnamdi Kanu, ask him why he listed me,” Wike said.

“I did not go to him to say I want to be a witness. Nobody has served me any process or subpoena.”

He added that while he would not act based on media reports, he would respect any lawful summons from the court. “If I am served or subpoenaed to give evidence, I must obey the court. I must appear,” he stated.

He however said, “You don’t become a witness by reading the newspaper. Nobody has served me any process; nobody has subpoenaed me,” Wike said.

“So, because I saw Wike listed, I will not begin to run helter-skelter. No, you don’t do that. If I am served, if I am subpoenaed to come and give a witness or give evidence, I must obey the court; I must appear.”

When asked if he knew why Nnamdi Kanu listed him as one of his witnesses, Wike responded that he did not, adding that only the IPOB leader could explain the reason.

“If you see Nnamdi Kanu, you ask him, ‘Why did you list me? I did not go and say I want to be a witness.’ So, if you see him, ask him, ‘Why did you list Wike as one of your witnesses?’
